Magnetic Discovery Jars

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 | 5 comments

I still need to find the right plastic containers for our magnetic discovery jars. Ones without bumps and ridges. Just straight, smooth, tall walls AND easy to peel off labels. Do you have a trick to get those annoying sticky labels off containers? If you do, I’d love to hear from you! Goodness knows how many containers I could re-use if only I could get those sticky labels off.

In the meantime, I made some temporary magnetic discovery jars using small cute glass jars. I say temporary because I don’t trust my kids around glass objects yet. For their magnetic wands, I hot-glued a magnet onto a craft stick. For fillers we used the following:

fuzzy pipe cleaners

bells

colourful paperclips

The hunt for more permanent containers continues…

  1. I normally use my nails to peel off price labels, and then use my erasers to remove the marks.

Read somewhere that says if you fill the jar with hot water (not wetting the outside) the adhesive should just melt off.

Oooo what interesting suggestions. I’ve not tried erasers before but I can imagine it working if I can get the paper bits off first. As for the hot water, I’m afraid of melting the plastic. Maybe not boiling water but just hot tap water? I wonder if that will be hot enough. Thanks so much for your suggestions Z :)

  2. Oh this looks fun. So where did you get your magnetic stick? I can imagine using this as a great quiet activity for the car. No mess and simple play. Great idea.

  3. The cleaning products which are orange or citrus based are really good for getting container labels (and any other sticky substance left by masking tape, blu-tac, car rego stickers etc) off things. Though I have noticed that when using it to remove labels from clear plastic containers, it dulls the container where it’s been rubbed on.
