It used to be so easy. You wanted to get out of the house to do some grocery shopping. You get your bag, jumped in the car and you were at shops within minutes – and you could be as quick or as long as you wanted. But now, the act of getting out the door requires a family discussion, the changing of nappies and clothes, prompts to go to the bathroom now before we go, the gathering of toys, packing prams and finding that lost shoe.
As a parent, it’s not just you any more. You are part of a family. As a parent, you are the responsible one. You make the decisions and feel the consequences that follow.
What To Pack In A Diaper Bag
What to pack in a diaper bag seems like a simple decision, but after lugging around a diaper bag that weighs more than you do – you realise that there’s an art to packing a diaper bag.
I’ve had four kids within the space of 3 and a half years. The first two were twins – (what an introduction to parenting!). Our diaper bag has evolved as our children grew. Our needs changed and so did our actual diaper bag and the contents within.
Here are our diaper bag essentials. We’ve had many other items come and go, but these diaper bag essentials have always packed, from our children’s newborn days till now, (my children are now 6, 4 and 2). These diaper bag essentials have made my life with kids so much easier.
1. Diaper. We just pack the one diaper nowadays.
2. Diaper wipes. I sometimes forget to refill – thank goodness I have a pack of antibacterial wipes in my handbag at all times.
3. Diaper rash cream.
4. Change mat.
5. Diaper disposal bags.
6. Drinks. It used to be formula or breast milk; now it’s bottles of water for all four kids.
7. Snacks. This will either be in the diaper bag or my handbag. Something small that we can all share in case of emergencies. Right now, for us, small servings of dried fruit work really well.
8. Change of clothes for all four kids. Where possible, I pick clothing items that can be worn by multiple children in case of emergencies. E.g. Pants that could also work as three quarter pants for the bigger boys; or a shirt that will fit the bigger boys and be biggish on their younger siblings.
9. Antibacterial wipes. I keep this in my handbag at all times. So convenient for messy situations and meal times.
10. Small first aid kit – bandaids, antibacterial cream. I keep this in my handbag at all times.
Diaper Bags: How To Lighten The Load
With three of my four children now toilet trained, their water bottles make up the bulk of our diaper bag. Lugging around four bottles of water, wherever we go is heavy work. To help lighten the load, instead of using the one big heavy diaper bag, we have two small backpacks. The older boys can help carry the backpacks too – (super helpful when I am out with all four of them on my own). We use one small backpack for all the water bottles and snacks, and the other small backpack for the other items.
My diaper bag has been with me these last six years as a parent. These diaper bag essentials have made my life with kids so much easier.
