Welcome to our Rainbow Writing Series. In this series, I will share free Rainbow Writing Printables that I have created for my children, following my recommended sequence for introducing writing letters to young children.

Rainbow writing encourages kinesthetic awareness and memory, which is required for good handwriting.

Rainbow writing is where children practice whole movements of letter writing many times over. They can use different colours or just simply repeat the movements over and over again.

When doing Rainbow Writing with young children, remember to:

  • Show them how to do the task before expecting them to complete the task independently.
  • Provide little phrases that describe the movement required to write the letter. I’ll share the phrases I use with my children for each free Rainbow Writing Printable that I share in the coming weeks.
  • Be prudent about the sequence in which you introduce letters to them. Here are four guidelines and a recommended sequence for introducing writing letters to young children.
  • Children learn best when presented with a variety of ways to reinforce a new skill. Provide children with a variety of mediums in which to repeat the same rainbow writing of a particular letter. E.g. A tray filled with sand, or salt or over sandpaper letters; or if you’re using these free Rainbow Writing Printables, use crayons, pencils, acrylic paint, water paints, oil pastels, etc.

How do I print this off? Can’t see anywhere on the google document to do it. Thanks!

    • Pauline says:

      Hi Erin,

There’s a print option under the file menu or a print button in the top left corner. Hope this helps. I’ll eventually move all my printables off google documents to make it clearer and easier for everyone.

SOOOO happy to have found your site. I just TODAY had a struggle with my 4 year old boy over writing. We do “school” together, but all of a sudden the writing portion has turned into a struggle. I was at wits end today. I know I need to make it fun and I just have run out of ideas. I LOVE this rainbow approach. Starting with letter a tomorrow! SOOOOO excited! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
