“I just can’t bake! Everything I try to bake turns into a disaster. I can’t even make a recipe from children’s cookbook work. A children’s cookbook!”.

My dear friend was sharing her frustrations in her baking attempts. She could very happily just not bake. However, as a mother of three, every now and then, she feels the urge to get in the kitchen with her kids and successfully bake something, anything.

Another friend of mine, sitting next to her, nods. “Do you know the number of times my sister has had to make macarons to perfect them? It took her months. Months of trial and error. Little things would either make or break the recipe.”

I completely understand both these stories. There are so many ways to ruin a recipe; you have to learn the little things. I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve burnt the cake, had cakes explode in the oven, etc.

I strongly relate to the need, as a mother, for simple recipes that work, every time. I don’t have months of end to practice recipes. I need recipes that don’t require fuss. Recipes that are fail proof. Recipes that are so easy, your kids (or you) can’t mess it up. Now call me fussy, but I’m not just after easy and fail proof recipes – they also need to be delicious.

I love quick bread recipes and the 2 Ingredient Bread Recipe that we shared with the world just over a year ago, was at the top of my list for easy, fail proof and delicious recipes. Now, I dare say, this Quick Bread Recipe for 2 Ingredient Sweet Bread is at the top of my list for easy, fail proof and delicious recipes.

Using this quick bread recipe, my 5 year old twins, N & M, made three batches of 2 ingredient sweet bread. With the new range of Ski Divine Yoghurts, they made:

Caramelised pear sweet bread. These had pear fruit pieces in them and was N’s favourite.

Apple cinnamon sweet bread. M is obsessed with apples. It’s the only fruit he eats. He loved the apple cinnamon sweet bread.

Butterscotch sweet bread. This was my favourite of the lot. The best way I could describe it would be, a healthy version of sticky date pudding. So, so yummy, (with much less sugar and calories – yay!).

Truth be told, the new Ski Divine yoghurts are delicious on their own. With flavours like caramelised pear, apple and cinnamon and butterscotch layer – you really can’t go wrong. Couple those yoghurts with some self raising flour, and you’ve got yourself a morning or afternoon of easy, fail-proof, kid-friendly baking with delicious, healthy, guilt-free results.

There are two types of recipes: real recipes and fake recipes.

Fake recipes. You taste something delicious. You politely inquire as to whether or not you may have the recipe. You’re given the recipe. You try it out. It does not work and end well; even after the 3rd try. These are fake recipes.

Fake recipes are like an application on your computer that keeps crashing while you are trying to get some work done. (While I’m writing this, my photo editing application is possessed and doing my head in! Grrr! ).

I’ve come across enough fake recipes to make me really value and appreciate real recipes.

Real recipes work – the first time. Real recipes end well – the first time and every time there after.

A dear friend of mine not only shared this real recipe with me; she baked it for me; delivered the bread to me straight from her oven; and gave me a hug on her way out.

Real recipes come from real friends; people with generous hearts.

This homemade no knead bread recipe by Jim Lahey of Sullivan Street Bakery was printed in the New York Times. It is out of this world delicious, unbelievably easy, and of utmost importance, a real recipe.

Jim Lahey says that even a four year old child could bake this. I will be teaching my four year old twin boys this recipe. Hopefully by the end of 2013, they will be baking this bread all by themselves; (except for handling hot pots from ovens – I’ll do that bit).

Have you tried this recipe yet?

Ingredients

Makes about 1.2L of bubble solution

2 cups dishwashing liquid

4 cups water

1/2 cup glycerol

A few notes about the ingredients:

I used a cheap dishwashing liquid (Morning Fresh) from the two dollar shop. Coincidence would have it that it cost me $2. Ha! Bear in mind the dishwashing liquid’s colour and fragrance as this will be what your bubble solution will look and smell like.

Use distilled water, (bought from the chemist), instead of tap water. The softer the water, the better your bubbles will be. I haven’t tried normal tap water yet, but a quick surf around the web shows that tap water also works.

Glycerol (also bought from the chemist) helps the bubbles last longer. If you don’t have glycerol, you can use sugar instead.

Regarding the amounts of dishwashing liquid, water and glycerol, the rule is, the closer it is to having equal parts of everything, the more longer your bubbles will last. So, if you made a batch of 1 cup dishwashing liquid, 1 cup water and 1 cup glycerol you would have a long-life bubble solution. I.e. if you could contain your bubble somehow and keep it from drying out it could potentially last months. Wow!

Method

If using sugar instead of glycerol, warm up the water. Gently mix all the ingredients together and leave it to sit in an open container. The longer you mix the solution and the longer you leave it, the better the solution will be.

Kindergarten. This is where I met Mr. Cornelius. He was very economical, clean and a hit with the kids. Before my teaching practicum in a kindergarten class, I had no idea such contraptions like Mr. Cornelius existed. A popcorn maker: cooks popcorn in minutes, doesn’t require any oil or butter, so easy to clean and portable. Needless to say, I promptly purchased my own Mr. Cornelius and he’s been an essential part of my kitchen and entertained countless children.

One dreary day I decided to introduce my children to Mr. Cornelius. Armed with a cupful of popping corn kernels, they wondered what this strange looking machine did.

The popcorn maker turned on and there were whizzing sounds followed by POP POP POP…. POP POP POP POP POP. Intriguing.

I think this next photo says it all. Perhaps you would like to caption it for me readers?
