Welcome to our Early Math Games Series for easy and fun math games to develop and support early numeracy skills.

Our last early math game, Mummy and Baby Dinosaurs, focused on counting and numeral identification. Children learn best when presented with a variety of games that reinforce the same mathematical concept. Today we will continue with another math game that focuses on numeral identification.

Bingo is such a versatile game; you can use it to reinforce so many different concepts. This math game, Teen Bingo is great for kids who can identify and name numerals from zero to ten, but may not necessarily be able to identify and name all the numerals to twenty.

Math Game: Teen Bingo

Focus: Math Number, Numeral Identification

Desired Results: Name and identify numerals 11-20;

Pre-Test: Display a set of numeral cards from 11 to 20, in random order. Ask the child to point to a given numeral. Can the child identify any or all the numerals from 11 to 20? Select a numeral card from 11 to 20. Can the child name any or all the numerals from 11 to 20 with the correct naming of number words in the ‘teens’?

Evidence of Learning: The child is able to identify and name all the numerals from 11 to 20, with the correct naming of number words in the ‘teens’.

When working with young children, remember to:

Show them how to do the task before expecting them to complete the task independently.

Limit the range of numbers being presented when introducing a new mathematical idea.

Provide children with a variety of early math games, which repeat the same mathematical understanding (e.g. counting, numeral identification, subitising, etc).

Teaching & Learning Experiences:

Download and print out our free printable Math Game: Teen Bingo.

One page has all the numerals from 11-20; cut these out and place them into a box.

I have also provided two pre-made bingo sheets with the numerals 11-20 randomly placed in a table.

There is also a blank bingo sheet template so that you can quickly create your custom made bingo sheet with numerals your child may need more practice with.

As each card is drawn out of the box, name the number. Ensure the correct naming of number words in the ‘teens’, (not to be confused with numbers ending in -ty).

Stamp the corresponding number on the teen bingo sheet. A numeral may be placed several times on a given bingo sheet. Encourage children to be thorough as they find the corresponding number on their teen bingo sheet.

The game is completed when all the numbers on their teen bingo sheet has been stamped.

Mr N&M are highly competitive, a trait exacerbated by being twins. When playing this game I remind them that it’s about finishing, rather than being the fastest.

You could use counters to cover the numbers, but my boys love using stamps. There’s only 2 of them, (unlike a class of 20), so I indulge them.

Extension Activity: Kids need to be familiar with the forward and backward number sequence, and be able to count from any given number. Challenge kids to stamp the number before or number after the card drawn from the box.

Welcome to the Early Math Games Series where I’ll be sharing easy and fun math games to develop and support early numeracy skills.

Last week, I shared a (very cute and yummy) math game, tiny teddies, which focuses on counting and developing a one-to-one correspondence. Children learn best when presented with a variety of games that reinforce the same mathematical concept. Today we will continue with another math game that focuses on counting.

This math game, egg carton is very similar to counting boxes. This is great for very young children who are beginning to show an interest in counting. Our current toddler in residence Mr E adores this game.

Math Game: {Counting} Egg Carton

Focus: Math Number, Counting

Desired Results: Match a number word to one, and only one object when counting; (one-to-one correspondence).

Pre-Test: Show the child five counters and ask them, “How many counters do we have here?” As the child counts the counters, do they say the number word in the correct sequence from one to five and do they have a one word, one counter match?

Evidence of Learning: Present the child with five counters and ask them, “How many counters do we have here?” The child should know and name the correct forward number word sequence and have a one word, one counter match.

When working with young children, remember to:

Show them how to do the task before expecting them to complete the task independently.

Limit the range of numbers being presented when introducing a new mathematical idea.

Provide children with a variety of math games, which repeat the same mathematical understanding (e.g. counting, numeral identification, subitising, etc). To support this, I will be sharing a variety of counting games, numeral identification games, subitising games, etc. as part of this Math Games series.

Teaching & Learning Experiences:

You will need an empty egg carton and some counters. Cut the egg carton into parts, one part with three cups, the other four, the last five.

Begin with the carton of three cups and three counters before increasing to four then five.

Model the activity. Focusing only on establishing a one-to-one correspondence, drop a counter one at a time into the carton containing three cups.

Let the child have a turn dropping a counter one at a time into each cup.

{Formative assessment}: Can the child drop one counter and only one counter into each box?

Further develop the child’s counting skills by counting the counters as they are dropped into the box.

{Formative assessment}: Can the child say the number word in the correct sequence having a one word, one counter match?

Extension Activities:

Extension activity one: After the child has counted the correct number of counters, show him/her the corresponding numeral on a number card or number line. The early introduction of the number line establishes a good framework for understanding number in all its’ various forms; (natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers).

Welcome to the Early Math Games Series where I’ll be sharing easy and fun math games to develop and support early numeracy skills.

Last week, I shared a math game, counting boxes, which focuses on counting and developing a one-to-one correspondence. Children learn best when presented with a variety of games that reinforce the same mathematical concept. So, today we will continue with another math game that focuses on counting.

When counting, a child first learns a sequential pattern of noises: ‘one, two, three, four, etc’. They then have to learn to co-ordinate these noises with physical movements of a finger and the eye along a line of objects, matching one noise to one object. (Sometimes the two-syllable word ‘seven’ is difficult for children to co-ordinate.)

Math Game: {Counting} Tiny Teddies

Focus: Math Number, Counting

Desired Results: Match a number word to one, and only one object when counting; (one-to-one correspondence).

Pre-Test: Show the child five tiny teddies and ask them, “How many teddies do we have here?” As the child counts the teddies, do they say the number word in the correct sequence from one to five and do they have a one word, one teddy match?

Evidence of Learning: Present the child with five teddies and ask them, “How many teddies do we have here?” The child should know and name the correct forward number word sequence and have a one word, one teddy match.

You will need a box of Tiny Teddy biscuits. This game will also work well with any snack of choice, (eg cheerios, carrot sticks, grapes, apple pieces, sultanas, etc).

Model the activity. Pick up a handful of tiny teddies and guess how many you’ve picked up. Count out the teddies as you place them in a row. Let the child check the count.

Let the child pick up a handful of tiny teddies and let them guess how many they have picked up. Have the child count the teddies as they place them in a row.

{Formative assessment}: Can the child say the number word in the correct sequence having a one word, one teddy match?

Extension Activities:

Extension activity one: After the child has counted the correct number of teddies, ask him/her to find the corresponding numeral on a number card or number line. The early introduction of the number line establishes a good framework for understanding number in all its’ various forms; (natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers).

Extension activity two: Create two rows of tiny teddies, next to each other. Compare the two rows of tiny teddies and decide which has the greater number of teddies. Figure out how many more teddies are in one line than are in the other line.

Setting a good numeracy framework for kids has always fascinated me. In the past, Lessons Learnt Journal has shared fun math games to develop subitising skills, counting skills and numeral identification skills. In this Early Maths Games series, I will be sharing more easy and fun activities to develop and support early numeracy skills.

The kids have gone to bed. There’s a buh-zillion things to do. I turn on my computer and a thumbnail of a video pops up in front of me. The buh-zillion things to do can wait. I can’t resist clicking that play button and watching that 15 second video.

It’s a short clip of Mr N&M playing. They were 14 months old. They waddled. They babbled. They played. They were oh-so-cute!

Now Mr N&M are 4 and a half years old. They run, crash, jump and if they had wings, they would fly. They talk, and talk, and talk from the moment they get up to the moment they finally go to sleep. Where did the time go? They have grown so much. They still play loads; and are ever so keen to learn.

When working with young children, remember to:

Show them how to do the task before expecting them to complete the task independently.

Limit the range of numbers being presented when introducing a new mathematical idea.

Provide children with a variety of math games which repeat the same mathematical understanding (e.g. counting, numeral identification, subitising, etc). To support this, I will be sharing a variety of counting games, numeral identification games, subitising games, etc as part of this Early Math Games series.

Math Games: {Counting} Boxes

Focus: Math Number, Counting

Desired Results: Match a number word to one, and only one, object when counting; (one-to-one correspondence).

Teaching & Learning Experience:

You will need a collection of boxes and some counters.

Begin with three boxes and three counters before increasing to five, ten and twenty.

Model the activity. Focusing only on establishing a one-to-one correspondence, place three boxes in front of the child and tell the child you have three counters. Drop a counter one at a time into each box.

Let the child have a turn dropping a counter one at a time into each box.

{Formative assessment}: Can the child drop one counter and only one counter into each box?

Further develop the child’s counting skills by counting the counters as they are dropped into the box.

{Formative assessment}: Can the child say the number word in the correct sequence having a one word, one counter match?

Extension Activities:

After the child has counted the correct number of counters, ask him/her to find the corresponding numeral on a number card or number line. The early introduction of the number line establishes a good framework for understanding number in all it’s various forms; (natural numbers, integers, rational numbers, real numbers).
