I made some discovery bottles for the boys when they were Miss K’s age. I was on the hunt for some inspiration and in putting this fab roundup together, found some other very fun ways to play with bottles. I am so trilled to share these 10 DIY toys using bottles.

I feel like a mad scientist. Glue gun in one hand. An assortment of curious fiddly things sprawled out before me. Empty bottles waiting to be filled with bold liquids. The creation of a new discovery (bottle) awaits! Eeeek!! Making these is so much fun.

Here are two new discovery bottles to add to our collection.

Bubbles Discovery Bottle:

Water
Dishwashing Liquid
Yellow powered tempera paint
Coloured matchsticks

Dancing Yarn Discovery Bottle:

Water
Coloured yarn
Coloured beads

Little E made up a tenpin bowling game. He lined up our discovery bottles, found a soft toy ball and in true Little E fashion (with much influence from his older twin brothers to be sure), he threw the soft toy ball at the bottles with all his might.

Because the ball was so soft and the bottles quite heavy, most remained standing. MUAH HA HA HA! Not for long! Reminiscent of the mighty Hulk, Little E got in amongst the bottles and whoosh! With a few swings of his little arms the bottles conceded victory to Little E.

I still need to find the right plastic containers for our magnetic discovery jars. Ones without bumps and ridges. Just straight, smooth, tall walls AND easy to peel off labels. Do you have a trick to get those annoying sticky labels off containers? If you do, I’d love to hear from you! Goodness knows how many containers I could re-use if only I could get those sticky labels off.

In the meantime, I made some temporary magnetic discovery jars using small cute glass jars. I say temporary because I don’t trust my kids around glass objects yet. For their magnetic wands, I hot-glued a magnet onto a craft stick. For fillers we used the following:

fuzzy pipe cleaners

bells

colourful paperclips

A glue gun opens up a world of possibilities. Now that I own one, I’m kicking myself for waiting this long to have one. For my first glue gun project, I made some discovery bottles.

It’s so simple. All I needed to do was fill up empty drink bottles with whatever I could think of and find, then glue the lid on.

The first bottle is filled with blue car wash, some cooking oil and some marbles. I was curious to see how the car wash and cooking oil would react to each other. They do mix and the resulting liquid is very thick and sluggish. The marbles are hard to spot through the opaque liquid but that makes it all the more fun to play with. N & M think that the marbles are sharks eggs.

The second discovery bottle is filled with green water, (coloured with green food dye). I popped some googly eyes, marbles and beads in there and the combination makes for a rattly bottle. This bottle is E’s favourite because he can shake things up and make a ruckus. M is convinced that the marbles are frogs eggs. He loves this bottle.

The last discovery bottle is filled with the left over glue from our bird in the cage craft. There wasn’t enough glue to fill the bottle so I added some water to the mix and the resulting liquid is fascinating. The glitter, sequins and beads I placed in the bottle clumps with the glue and if you leave the bottle untouched for awhile it settles in one spot. Then when you tip it around the glitter, beads and sequins move around like the coloured bits of a lava lamp. If you shake it around profusely it becomes a bottle of glittery goodness.

N takes the bottles and brings another element of play to it. He pretends they are light sabres. They are the right colours for it after all.
