Crisis reveals character.

 
A true story: a tragic illness suddenly strikes a healthy 30 year old woman. She is a wife, a mother of three young children, a loved friend, a wonderful blogger.

 
It has been three months since the tragedy happened. She is fighting hard to get back home; but recently she encountered some setbacks that have placed her rehabilitation back to the beginning. She still can’t speak to her husband and kids.

 
Her family are fighting on too.

I was fortunate enough to have the privilege to interview Kerry in June, before all this happened. I sat on the interview for awhile because life got busy. Then I heard about Kerry and her family. I wanted very much to let them know of Kerry’s interview, but I knew they had important battles to fight; so I sat on the interview a bit longer.

 
This Saturday, on the 24th November, New Mum Online has organised a coordinated time for people to send their prayers and positive thoughts for Kerry. With the wave of positive thoughts heading to Kerry and her family, and after some correspondence with Emma, (Kerry’s Science Sparks partner), I think now is a good time to share Kerry’s interview.

 
I can only imagine how hard this battle is for Kerry and her family. I hope Kerry’s interview, her ABCs of Me, provides them with some encouragement.

Kerry is Multiple Mummy. With a tagline, “because eight arms are never enough!”, it was blog love at first sight. I love Multiple Mummy’s honest and down-to-earth insights into a family life.

 
Kerry is also part of the Science Sparks duo that is Kerry and Emma. Science Sparks,  is an amazing science teaching resource. It does a brilliant job engaging children in investigating, exploring and understanding the world through science.

I used to scour books (of the paper form!) for ideas on how to spend our days as a young family. It was hard work, trying to find creative play and learning ideas. Enter the Imagination Tree. The Imagination Tree was my introduction to creative play and learning blogs. I never knew such things existed. Needless to say, I’ve been immersed in the world of creative play and learning blogs ever since.

Anna is the creator behind the mind blowing resource that is The Imagination Tree, (Blog of the Year in the MADs Awards 2011-2012).  Anna changed the way my family reads together. She changed the way we view play. As our family grows, the Imagination Tree continues to be an inspiration; but what I really love and admire is Anna’s humble, genuine and approachable manner.

When I first started blogging, I very luckily stumbled on a post  titled “remembering” by wordplayhouse. It took my breath away. I  raved on about how gorgeous the blog was to my husband. I marvelled at the quality of the blog, (and still do). It is simply stunning and a delight to read. I feel so privileged to introduce to you a beautiful mother of a few, and New York Times best selling children’s book illustrator, Heather Cahoon from wordplayhouse.

Age…I don’t feel like I got older after I turned 20, but I feel wizened and relaxed in my role as a mother these years (and a few kids) later. I think I will still have the spirit of a 20-year-old when I am 80. And, I wonder if we all have that aging-denial that keeps us internally, eternally at some young age.
Bed Size… Queen. And, I have to sleep with two pillows.
Chore that you hate…Cleaning up children’s vomit. I’m glad it’s that, because at least it isn’t an every day chore. Or, even an every year one.
Dogs..1
Essential start to the day…our three year old coming in to wake me up (he is my alarm—and with his smile and hug it’s better than the beeping kind—even if it is a little too early sometimes), then breakfast
Favorite color…Soft grey. Just look in my shirt drawer—pretty shades of grey. Or, my kitchen wall—flowers or a bowl of fresh fruit pops with cheerful colorfulness against grey. Love grey.

Instrument you play…piano, guitar, cello
Job…mother, children’s book illustrator, designer
ages of Kids…10, 7, 3, and one on the way (!)
Where do you Live ?…New York
Favourite Movie… old classics—Audrey Hepburn
Nickname…Mom!
Overnight hospital stay…just with the birth of our first two babies, then we started having them at home.
Pet Peeve…Deer Ticks. Our chldren love to play in the woods and I encourage their exploring, climbing, and healthy doses of fresh air. But, each evening we have to scour for Deer Ticks—those notarious carriers of Lyme’s Disease. And, yes, we usually find a few to remove. Deer Ticks love our woods too.
Quote …”Oh, well.” That’s mine, and even our youngest has oft quoted me. You say this with a shrug of your shoulders and a smile whenever something not quite right happens. Our toddler puts his pants on backwards? “Oh, well.” A drink tips over? “Oh, well.” Why? Because, there are so many worse things that could happen than getting upset over a  glass of spilled milk (and “Don’t cry over a glass of spilled milk IS a real quote).

Siblings…2 younger sisters, who are and now my good friends.
Time it takes you to get ready …10 minutes. I put a big knot in my long hair. Stroke on mascara. And, pull on clothes—If you select a few nice pieces to keep in your closet  when you first buy them, you should look put together just throwing something on. A classic cut dress in the summer is my favorite. It’s only one piece to throw on. And, it always looks flattering. I could use another 40 minutes to look beautiful. But, 10 minutes is all I need to feel a natural pretty. And, that’s good enough.
Underwear … I’m picky. I like pretty ones. But, no thongs—they feel like an eternal wedgie.
Vegetable you hate … I love vegetables. My husband can even tame the wild out of the bitter greens so they taste mild and sweet. I think he sautees them with a pinch of sugar and balsamic vinegar.
What makes you run late … Snow + exploding diapers. Getting a few kids bundled up with hats, mittens, scarves, boots (and looking for missing boots)…then, having to go out and scrape off a car with a foot of snow on top. Somehow baby’s diapers always explode, and then there is a full outfit change right as we’re heading out the door too. With a baby coming at the onset of winter this year, it will be a lovely combination. Snow AND explosions.
Xrays you’ve had … lungs a few times and a broken wrist. I was sledding on the same sled as my sister when we were young. We crashed and both walked away with a broken bone. We live on the top of a hill and the children and I sled a lot in the winter time. I still love sledding.
Yummy food that you make … moist, vegan chocolate cupcakes from scratch, with buttercream frosting (which, then, makes them very un-vegan when that is added)
Zoo animal … jelly fish—they are so graceful. Approaching work, mothering, and decisions with a sense of grace brings beauty and calm to life.

I am pleased to introduce to you Ness from One Perfect Day. I first fell in love with One Perfect Day’s wonderful rainbow cupcakes. How could I not love the creator of such colourful delights? As I delved further into One Perfect Day, I grew fond of Ness’ ability to blog honestly about her parenting journey. I’m sure you will be smitten with One Perfect Day in no time.

Age: 40 (it was my birthday just last last week in fact!)

Bed Size: Well the tag says Queen but when our son joins us every morning it feels more like a single.

Chore that you hate: Grocery shopping. I find it exhausting! Planning, shopping, packing it away….

Dogs: None. Although my son has been asking for a puppy so that may change soon. (He also wants a rabbit a frog!)

Essential start to the day: Cuddles and Coffee (lots and lots of coffee!)

Favourite colour: This changes often for me. Lately it’s been turquoise and silver.

Gold or silver: White gold

Height: 169cm

Instrument you play: I played piano when I was in high school. I really should take it up again.

Job: SAHM and freelance writer

Kids: R, my son, is 3.5 years old.

Where do you Live: Australia

Favourite Movie: I wish it was something a little more highbrow, but if I had to pick just one, it would be Love Actually. I watch it every year at Christmas and it makes me cry every time!

Nickname: I’ve never really had one.

Overnight hospital stays: When my son was born I spent several nights in the hospital as he was jaundiced and was in intensive care.

Pet Peeve: Arrogance

Time it takes you to get ready: I have it down to a fine art these days. Shower, hair, make-up all done in under 10 minutes. (Notice I said done, not done “well”.)

Vegetable you hate: Brussel Sprouts.

What makes you run late: Three year olds.

Xrays you’ve had: Quite a few actually. Most recently my fingers after I slammed them in a door. (No fractures found)

Yummy food that you make: Desserts are my thing. I make a stellar Pavlova.

Zoo animal: Any of the big cats.
